The day had to be perfect. Nick had been planning it for a long time, at least for two months. Two years since Val had made him the happiest man in the universe and he wanted to celebrate.

They didn't have to worry about the girls for the day. Tasha and Logan had taken the twins and Sammy was with Nathan. That left quality time with his wife and Nick was going to use every second of it.

Dinner reservations were made in Rome and the gifts had been purchased and wrapped well in advance. Now all he needed was to get his wife out of the house.

With a smile on his face he went to find her.

Ghosts, mutants, aliens, magic, monsters- stories from the tabloids, only believed by the paranoid and gullible, right? Recent events have shown us that this is not entirely the case.

During World War II, a drug was developed by the US Army that altered the physiology of anyone who took it. Unbeknownst to the American public, this drug was possibly as much of a factor in the victory of the Allies as Einstein’s atomic bomb.

Steven Rogers was one of the soldiers who volunteered as test subjects for this experimental drug. He was also the only one for whom it had the desired effects.
With every aspect of his physiology altered to the peak of human capability and with extensive combat and tactical training, Rogers was, as one man, able to pull off covert operations that would have been impossible for anyone else. His existence was kept secret from all but the most powerful and trusted American officials.

In the years after Rogers’ apparent death during a mission in the Arctic, many attempts at duplicating the effects of the serum were made. Experiments with radiation, genetics and even, in some cases, mysticism. No official successes were recorded. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Captain America was the first and only “superhuman.” He is, in fact, far from it.

For decades now, there have been rumours of people with strange abilities. Tabloid reporters and conspiracy theorists have told story after story about aliens, mutants and mystic beings walking among humanity, and until recently, they have been shrugged off as nothing more than stories. But a recent boom in the mutant population has made it impossible to deny: the world is changing, whether humanity is ready for it or not.

Faced with the possibility of teleporting suicide bombers or spies who could read minds, the agency known as SHIELD was created by the UN Security council to investigate and disable any super-human or non-human threat to humanity as a whole.

The world knows that SHIELD is the authority on superhuman crime. What it doesn’t know is just how much of the agency is made up of those it fears, and that the program actively recruits these people for its most dangerous and important missions. Mutant and other meta-human agents make up an entire black ops division of the agency.

The enemy is not afraid to use any resource -including mutants- to achieve its goals. In order to disable this threat, the playing field must be made equal. Fire must be fought with fire, even if the public is to be kept in the dark.

The war cannot be fought on television or the battlefield. It must be fought in the shadows.

This Thursday, the 11th, will be two years of playing Nick and two years of being on Sages. It doesn't seem like two years already. Time flies when playing an old, cranky spy.

To those who are still around, I still love RPing with you guys.

To the respective muns of Domino, Shatterstar, Valentina, Cable, Nate Grey, TJ, Black Tom, Juggernaut(s), Kitty Pryde, Rachel Summers, Elektra, Deadpool and the other pups you all play, I'm really glad to have RP'ed with you all. I hope there is more to come. If I missed anyone, I'm sorry and please forgive me!

And a special shout out to Daredevil-Mun. A reply to one of Matt's posts is the first time Nick ever posted.

To those who have gone on to greener pastures, I miss playing with you. I was sorry to see you leave and sorry that you felt like you had to leave.

I miss all the Marvel insanity that used to happen. Who could forget Ben Grimm suggesting that Nick, Ben, Frank and Logan team up? And Sue Storm giving all the guys hell? Namor tossing boats? I can't tell you all how many times my coworkers gave me strange looks for the constant giggling and laughing I used to do. I miss you all.

It's been a great two years.

Nick stepped out of the Nexus portal and was immediately hit by a gust of cold air. He shivered against the cold and cursed winter's bite. Italy wasn't exactly warm, but it was hell of a lot warmer than this place.

He had managed to get away from the house for an hour or two. He loved his girls, the three kids and Val, more than words could ever say, but he needed a short break. The walls had started to close in around him and a bit of fresh air was just what he needed. He just wished that air was a little warmer.

His first stop had been Tasha's. Logan wouldn't let him draw another breath if Nick didn't check up on her and the kids once and awhile. Satisfied that they were all fine, Nick stepped into the Nexus and then out again, ending up in a blizzard.

Grumbling, he pounded on the door with a fist. A basket dangled from the other hand.

Nick opened the fridge and removed a six pack of beer and placed the bottles in the cooler at his feet. He looked down at the six bottles in the cooler and took out another six pack. He removed another six pack from the fridge and placed the bottles in the cooler with the other two. He removed some left over pasta and placed the container in the cooler as well. Another dish of pasta followed the first.

Nick grabbed the cooler and headed for the garage. He grabbed two fishing poles, the cooler and headed toward the pond on Tasha's property.

Nate, him, beer and some food. It was a good way to spend the afternoon, despite the weather being a little on the cold side, away from all the estrogen in his house. He adored Val and the girls, but even he needed a break from them once and awhile.

Nick looks at his wife sitting across from him on the blanket they spread out for their impromptu picnic and smiles. She's holding the twins, one on each leg, and Sammy is on Nick's lap. Val has never looked so beautiful. Nick knows he's a lucky man. A beautiful wife and three adorable daughters. A man can't ask for more in life.

He hands Sammy an orange slice and the infant grabs it immediately.

Nick turns off the television and sighs. The Registration act was causing more problems than it was fixing, or attempting to fix. He wants to go back into SHIELD, but knows he can't. Val and the girls mean more to him than anything else.

This situation was going to get worse before it gets better.

He knows it's just a matter of time before he gets dragged into it. There is no way he'd tell Steve no if Steve asked for any more help.

He shifts a sleeping Jo in his arms and sighs. He doesn't care if he gets caught up in it, but Val and the girls were a different matter. He didn't want them anywhere near this shit. He stands up and quietly walks into the nursery. He lays Jo down next to Nikki and does a quick check on Sammy. Satisfied that his girls were sleeping and safe, he quietly pads into his bedroom.
